Find Your Long Lost Money for Free

First I want to say thank you to my sister for informing me that I might have unclaimed money lying around. It has come to my attention that over the years one might have accumulated forgotten unclaimed funds due to many reasons (e.g. Military brat, job hopping, bank closure, over paying for taxes, student loans or other debt….). Whatever the reason you owe it to yourself to see if you are “leaving money on the table.”

So what Is Unclaimed Money

If the government or some organization (i.e bank, ebay, paypal….) owes you money and you did not collect it (your moved, check loss in mail), then it’s unclaimed. It now becomes up to you to claim your missing money and take the appropriate steps to claim your property

Missing Money – How Much Can I Claim

Most state in America (and other countries such as Canada) has an unclaimed money program that is used to locate owners of unclaimed properties/funds that have been misplaced, forgotten or left in the name of a deceased person. For example I was able to find a few lost payments for myself from Ebay,Paypal, Clickbank, Citibank, and SalieMae. You could possibly find  utility bills and deposits, bank accounts, insurance policies, un-cashed checks, wages, unclaimed inheritance, bonds, stocks, mutual funds and dividends, trust funds, escrow accounts, pensions, tax refunds and bank failures that companies were unable to pay you in the past.

Note: It does not include physical property like houses, cars, boats….

Where To Find Your Missing Money/Property

The most efficient way to locate unclaimed property and missing money is through your state’s treasury office.

How to Find and Fill Out The Forms Necessary To Claim My Money

Example California:

Since I had unclaimed funds in California i did a search for unclaimed funds in California an found the state’s treasury office website www.sco.ca.gov/upd_msg.html

Below are a few screenshots of the steps I took to recover a past check from Ebay.

See end of this post for instructions on finding the online unclaimed funds site for your specific State (remember to search all the states you lived in before)

Step 1: Enter your name and city (try various cities you lived at in the pass) then click search

Step 2: Click on the different ID Numbers shown to see details about property found

 

Step 3: Click on the Claim This Property button on the bottom right

Step 4: Choose E-file and click continue

Step 5: Fill out the necessary fields and click continue

 

Step 6: Complete the final confirmation and then hit submit

Step 7: Print your claim then sit back and wait for a check to show up in the mail

Note: to find your state do a search below. For example if your state is New York search below for Unclaimed funds New York then click on the link that corresponds to your sate. If you live in a different country e.g. Canada you can do the same there are lot of sites available for Canadians. NOTE: YOU SHOULD NOT BE CHARGED FOR DOING THIS SERVICE.
